CRICKET CHAMPIONS

BAY VIEW HIGH BEAT SOUTHSHORE IN FINAL

By Kevin Nazareth

The Oasys inter-school cricket got off to a start with Bay View High School playing The Lyceum School in the first match of Group “B”, a total batting collapse let the BVHS boys down and The Lyceum boys won this match with ease.

The second match versus the D.A.Public School O and A Levels, batting first the Bayviewites rattled up a modest score on the P.A.D. ground, in their allotted 20 overs scored 142 for the loss of 6 wickets, Jahangir Shah Khan top scored with a patient 78 off 73 balls, with opening batsman Danial Naqi (16) and Nizamuddin Sheikh (12) reaching double figures. D.A. Public got off to a solid start and after 4 overs were going great guns, at a rate of 10 runs an over, a magic spell of spin bowling from Usama Ibrahim (3 for 11) turned the match around, and with vice captain Asad Dalal (3 for 23), Hisham Bokhari (2 for 32) and Jahangir Khan (1 for 24) skittled them out for 120 runs. Jahangir Khan with his man of the match performance put BVHS into the semi finals, with this 22 run victory.

The semi final was a tense affair, with Bay View High taking on Group “A” winners, The City School P.A.F. chapter. Batting first The city School were bundled out for 128 runs in 19.1 overs, Jahangir Khan (2 for 11), Usama Zaman  (2 for 20) and Aman Jafri (1 for 11 in 3 overs) doing the damage. Jahangir Shah Khan again shone like a beacon, and his solid knock of 72 runs, led the way for BVHS reaching the final, wicket keeper batsman Danial Naqi (15), front order batsman Ozair Qaiser (12), and pinch hitter Aman Jafri supported Jahangir to the finish, Bay View won by 4 wickets.

The final against last years champions Southshore, was a thriller. Batting first Southshore, who were 78 for 8 in 14 overs, banged the Bayviewites bowling all over the park to score a reasonable score of 146 runs in their stipulated 20 overs, Usama Zaman  took 2 for 39 and Aman Jafri 3 for 31 of 3 overs. Jahangir Khan opening the innings with Danial Naqi, lost his wicket to a fine delivery on the 5th ball of the first over, the Bayviewites were stunned, Ozair Qaiser was sent in to replace Jahangir, and with Danial at the other end steadied the ship, Danial got out after scoring a quick fire 44 runs, hitting the bowlers to all parts of the ground, the Southshore boys fought on with some fine bowling, pinch hitter Nizamuddin Sheikh (16) was sent in, but he was all nerves and was soon back in the pavilion, captain Mehdi Raza joined Ozair, and what a responsible innings he played, teaming up with Ozair to the very end  , needing 7 runs to win off the last over, Ozair Qaiser 65 runs not out, hit a 6 on the second last ball of the match, to clinch victory and the championship, Mehdi remained 14 not out.

After the match was won the Bay View High School boys went berserk, there were scenes of joy and jubilation all over, and it was their first triumph as a team, and a win after so many years. Ozair Qaiser was adjudged man of the final, and Jahangir Shah Khan was declared the man of the series. It was sheer delight for me as their coach to see that their hard work and dedication pay off in the end. Well done boys, and keep up that unity as a team, and you shall win more in life.

THE TEAM: Mehdi Raza (captain),  Asad Dalal (vice captain),  Danial Naqi, Nizamuddin Sheikh, Ozair Qaiser,  Jahangir Shah Khan,  Usama Ibrahim,  Sanakhawan Syed,  Aman Jafri, Hisham Bokhari, Usama Zaman, Tayyab Khan,  Moinuddin Sheikh,  and Humair Dawood,
